Port Hardy was incorporated as a district municipality in 1966. Municipal staff oversee the efficient management and operation of the town's recreation facilitates and public works system. Sports fishing, boating, scuba diving, kayaking and whale watching are among the many ways to enjoy the natural beauty of the North Island coast. Port Hardy has a modern, fully-equipped hospital with acute care beds and a full-time medical staff. The hospital provides the region with laboratory, ultrasound, radiology, fluoroscopy, x-ray and physiotherapy services. Attached to the hospital is an extended care wing and there is a separate housing complex for senior citizens.
Other community health care facilities include two medical clinics, a public health unit and two dental clinics. The community is well served by several doctors and dentists, an acupuncturist, a chiropractor and an optometrist. An ambulance service with two ambulances is on-call 24 hours a day.

Port Hardy has a full range of educational and daycare facilities. School District No. 85 operates three elementary schools and one secondary school. The school district is proud of its Special Needs program which provides special services to students requiring additional classroom service. Pre-school children may attend one of several privately operated daycare facilities staffed by professionally-trained and certified staff. The Seventh-Day Adventist Church provides private school educational services.
Post secondary educational opportunities are available through North Island College. The College offers credit courses in adult basic education, university, vocational, career-technical, business and computer science. An extensive non-credit program is also offered throughout the year. Port Hardy is the College's administrative centre for the North Island and Central Coast Region. A full-time resident staff of instructors provide regular classroom instruction, in addition to being available for one-on-one assistance to students.Library and Museum
Port Hardy is served by a public library which boasts a large collection of books and a comprehensive reference section. Through an inter-library loan network, patrons also have access to the province's three university libraries, the North Island College library and to all books in the Vancouver Island Regional Library system. The Port Hardy Museum and Archives, with its exhibits on the area's natural and cultural history, rounds out Port Hardy's educational and cultural facilities. The museum is open on a daily basis.
